Speed Glue
Speed glues are a performance-enhancing glue that enhances the speed and spin of a rubber. This happens by expanding the sponge under the topsheet, making the sheet curl up. When the rubber is pressed down flat, the topsheet is being pulled like a trampoline, creating a strong effect.
Speed glues have since been banned by the
ITTF due to containing
VOCs which are harmful to people.
It was discovered by accident in the 1970s when a player used bicycle puncture repair glue to fix his racket before a match. The difference in the play of the ball became immediately obvious. The high performance effect lasts only a few hours.
