The purple sponge of the Waran III - which is the same as that of the Ozelot Pro - is a new development from 2023. 10 years ago, the sponge of the Waran II was the absolute top model in the factory, but a lot has happened since then. The differences between the two sponges are therefore correspondingly large. The Waran III sponge is harder than the Waran, but a tad softer than the Waran II (hardness level 44-46 degrees). However, it is not only considerably faster and more catapult-like, but also much more elastic.
Waran III should therefore only be considered as a backhand rubber for very offensive players.
The target group for use as a forehand rubber is likely to be larger. For example, if you play a slow blade and a long pimple on the backhand and are looking for a rubber with which you can attack powerfully with the forehand despite your blade, then Waran III could be the right solution for you.
Very fast short pips with reasonable spin. It’s the fastest short pips I’ve used. Will topspin and loop against chop but difficult to do against topspin as doesn’t grip the ball enough so can be inconsistent. Pushes are strong as are blocks but the high speed makes touch and drop shots very difficult. Very good at hitting. Serves are fairly spinny for a short pimple. I use rubber on both sides at the moment. Coming from using reverse rubbers it’s an easy change but have to change style of play. It’s the best short pips I’ve used for aggressive play. Faster than Waran 2 but less control.
Fast, but controlable. Easy to use. Very good for tradicional penholders. Fast backhand block and good for forehand too. Good spin and drive. Better than Waran 1 and Waran 2.
Switched from inverted, Rasanter R47, to this. It is my first pips out rubber, wanted something else but it is not available in my country. As a first impression, Waran3 is a versatile rubber with some spin potential, despite being a SP. I use it for backhand, compared with R47, Waran3 is obviously slower (and no wonder, the purple sponge is not tensor) yet i gladly sacrifice little speed for control. I transited to SP because i wanted a fast rubber insensitive at spin, which allows me to attack in early game with speed and well placed balls. Waran3 excels at blocks and sudden change of the tempo or ball direction. Having spin potential, flicks are possible, even pseudo-flicks but the motion must be done sharply and more upward-forward, like a straight punch. Waran3 is horizontally aligned short pips, and because of this aspect almost has no reversal and mild deception. If i wanted deception i would have picked vertically aligned SP and for reversal LP or MP. What i don`t like is that the farther you get from the table, the less effective my hits become, but this aspect known about SP. From mid distance, i`m coping firmly against strong loopers or jamming aggressive smashers. I would like to see Waran3 with 2.2 mm sponge, but overall... good rubber, SpinLord. Keep it up!
