Review of DHS Hurricane 3 (H3)This is a great first rubber. It has average speed, which makes it easier to try all strokes when practicing. There are mild variations of this rubber in the market, but they are all very similar. Some versions are tuned to have high tension so avoid those in the beginning because they are too fast. Once you master returning difficult services you can add high tension. This rubber is available with various sponge hardnesses, the most common one being 39 degrees on DHS scale. Harder rubbers will have a more dangerous top gear, but they require more accurately timed strokes because there is less dwell time. Most hurricanes are very tacky when new to a point where the sheet can hold the ball upside down. This extreme tackiness fades quickly and the bounce becomes more lively, but the sheet remains tacky and it has enough grip to generate high spin even when it is old. You can extend the life by removing dust regularly and covering the sheet with adhesive protective film when not in use. High humidity reduces grip. This is true for all rubbers, but it's more noticeable with hurricanes because the loss of grip is more dramatic. The weight is normally around 43g, which is much lighter than Tenergy 05 for example, but the hardest tuned sheets will be over 50g per sheet when cut to a typical size blade. The great thing about this rubber is that you can keep using it as you become a better player. You just need to increase the hardness and use tuned versions. You won't have to change your stroke because you are already used to playing with a hard rubber. You can use this rubber on the backhand if you are strong, but you will have to whip the ball with you wrist in order to get similar speed as your forehand. Start with an allround blade and keep it as long as possible. Work on your footwork and timing to increase speed instead of getting a fast blade because you will have better control overall. Even allround blades have high speed in top gear when you use hard rubber.

Review of Juic 999 DefenceThis is a tacky defensive rubber. If you think hurricane is about high spin and control then you haven't tried this. Hurricane is about producing maximum spin on high impact shots, which also produce high speed. Any offensive rubber with high speed and spin will have low control by definition. Just because you can control the rubber to your satisfaction doesn't mean the rubber inherently has high control. This rubber sacrifices speed to improve control without sacrificing spin too much. The result is that you can place high spin shots with more accuracy compared to hurricane. You can also take the pace off to slow down the game by chopping or blocking. The downside is that you cannot kill a high ball effectively so you need a faster rubber on the other side to survive modern game. You can see how professionals flip their racket in game to a faster side when dealing with high balls.

Review of Nittaku Hurricane Pro III Turbo BlueThis is a hybrid rubber with Chinese top sheet and Japanese sponge, but if you don't like regular Chinese hurricane then stay away from this also. It is even harder and heavier than regular hurricane. The spin on services is mind-blowing: stronger than other hurricanes, tenergies and esn rubbers. You can win many points on services against lower level players. The speed is initially slow because the ball easily sticks to the surface, but once you break through the tackiness you can see that the top gear is very fast. It is faster than regular hurricanes, even boosted hurricanes. I think this is because of the hardness. Many rubbers are becoming harder these days because 40+ balls have less spin. This is a trend we are seeing now. If you are playing with regular hurricane now and want to try harder rubber then try this. If you find it too hard then you can try the orange version, which is almost the same with a bit less speed and spin in the top gear. If you are just starting to play table tennis then this will be too hard to use. Regular hurricane is easier to use if you want to play Chinese style. If you know what you are doing then you can boost this rubber for even more outrageous loops, but be careful to not overboost it because the top sheet can peel away from the sponge if you do it wrong. If you don't need the extreme speed of the super thick sponge then you can try using the thick sponge or even the middle sponge if you like to chop. This rubber can work with pips on the backhand because pips are lighter. If you use heavy inverted rubber on the backhand then I recommend using the lightest blade you can find.
